High School Pre-Participation Athletic Screenings Scheduled
LeConte Sports Medicine is gearing up for our annual pre-participation athletic screenings! All student athletes in Sevier County are required by the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) to have a pre-participation screening in order to be eligible for tryouts or practices for the 2013-2014 school year. The TSSAA requires that these pre-participation screenings take place between May 1 – August 30 annually in order to participate in athletics in the coming school year.
Paint the Mountains Pink raises funds to provide screenings
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Mammography can detect cancer up to two years before it is detected with a self breast exam - this tool alone finds 85-90% of breast cancers. The current American Cancer Society guidelines recommend a yearly mammogram for women starting at age 40. In any given year, only 50% of women aged 40 – 85 years old have a mammogram. Why do so many women go unscreened? The two main reasons are that they are uneducated as to the importance of early detection, and/or they are uninsured and cannot afford the screening.
