Posted on April 13, 2018

East Tennessee’s own Dr. Eric Hasemeier, DO, CMD, has always known he wanted to help others.  “I’ve found my niche and purpose in life. This is my dream job,” says Hasemeier, the chief executive officer and founder of Dr. Hasemeier and Associates.

Medical Director of the Year Dr. HasemeierHis work has made a powerful difference, and now he is being nationally recognized by the Foundation for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine as their 2018 Medical Director of the Year. Dr. Hasemeier is the medical director for eight facilities in rural Tennessee including two Covenant Health Facilities – Fort Sanders Sevier Nursing Home, here in Sevierville, and Claiborne Health and Rehabilitation Center in Claiborne County.

Dr. Hasemeier is recognized as a leader by his colleagues due to making several important quality improvement efforts in his facilities. He introduced an aggressive antibiotic stewardship program that has significantly reduced the incidence of C. diff. He also established ongoing gradual dose reductions efforts for antipsychotics and anxiolytics that reduced the percentage of patients using these drugs from over 50% to under 10%. At the same time, he developed an aggressive bladder retraining program that has significantly reduced and even eliminated the in-house use of Foley catheters.

Not only does Dr. Hasemeier deliver regular educational programs for staff and practitioners at his facilities, but he also presents on a variety of topics throughout the state and nationally.

“It’s an honor to be recognized, especially by my peers and colleagues,” says Dr. Hasemeier. “Every morning, I get up and look forward to going to work. I love what I do.”

The Medical Director of the Year Award, established in 2007, recognizes those individuals whose vision, passion, leadership, and commitment succeed in taking patient care in the facilities they serve as medical directors to exceptional levels of quality, excellence, and innovation.
