LeConte Recognizes Cheryl Fisher, LPN, as First DAISY Award Winner

At LeConte Medical Center, we recently began participating in a new program designed to honor our nurses who provide extraordinary care. The DAISY Award is an international nurse recognition program that celebrates the compassion and skills nurses bring to patients and families every day.

Last week, we surprised our first winner, Cheryl Fisher, an LPN in our medical unit. Cheryl was nominated by a patient who wrote:

“My family member’s nurse, Cheryl, comes in the room as a ray of sunshine! She’s cheerful and sets the tone for the room visit with an affirmation of caring, willingness to help and creating comfort in the environment as she attends to my family member. Cheryl is positive in her interactions with visitors as well. I recognize, to the degree that I can, having never been in health care, what a challenging job nursing is. To enter each room as if her main goal is to care for this one person is a gift. Cheryl appears to have a servant’s heart and there is nothing that impresses me more! I hope she continues nursing for many years. The sick and ailing patients will be comforted by her healing touch through her efforts in care and her emotional support that is vital to a patient’s recovery. As I go to work, I’m comforted by knowing my family member is cared for by such a compassionate soul. Kindness cures!” 

The DAISY Award was established in 1999 by the family of a patient, J. Patrick Barnes, who had received extraordinary care and compassion from his nurses during his final days. At a quarterly surprise reception,  our winners receive: 

• A certificate 
• A DAISY award pin
• A unique, hand-carved sculpture from Zimbabwe entitled “A Healer’s Touch” 
• A bouquet of daisies 
• A Cinnabon cinnamon roll (Patrick’s favorite food) 

Nurses may be nominated by patients and families, and they are chosen by a committee at LeConte Medical Center to receive The DAISY Award. To nominate a nurse today visit here.
