    Meet our Athletic Trainers

    Scott Byrd | Rissa AndresJosh Gallimore | Jay Smith

    Scott Byrd, ATC/L  

    Scott A. Byrd, ATC/LScott A. Byrd, ATC/L, is a graduate of Jefferson County High School, where he earned letters in baseball and wrestling. He then attended Lincoln Memorial University on a scholarship for baseball until he transferred to Carson-Newman College to complete his degree work in Physical Education and Health while concentrating on Athletic Training. While at Carson Newman, he traveled with most sports teams and assisted with the nationally-ranked Lady Eagle softball teams for over two years.

    Scott participated athletically on the international level while playing baseball in Yugoslavia in 1991 with Athletes in Action. He has also completed an athletic trainer apprenticeship with the Knoxville Blue Jays in 1992. In 1993, and again in 2002, Scott has been an active participant providing medical services for the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Knoxville. In 1992, Scott accepted a role with Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic to provide game night football coverage for Rutledge High School. While in Rutledge, he also filled in as an assistant softball coach and interim elementary physical education teacher. He worked for both organizations until accepting a position as head athletic trainer at Walters State Community College in 1997. Scott later developed a contract between Walters State and Cosby High School to provide athletic injury consultation for the Cosby High athletic program.

    In 1999, Scott accepted a position with Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge until he transferred to the Fort Sanders Therapy Center in Sevierville in November. It was at this time when he began coverage of Gatlinburg -Pittman High School.

    Scott began to work on what was to become the Sevier County Sports Medicine Program. The program was officially contracted with the Sevier County School system in August 2001. The program provides certified/licensed athletic trainers to all four of Sevier County's high schools. As program coordinator, Scott ensures that quality health care is being provided to the schools and the standards of the program goals are being met.

    The LeConte Medical Center Sports Medicine Program Received the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society's Corporate Award in January 2005. Scott has received awards from the Tennessee Athletic Trainers Society as the Joe Worden Clinical / Professional Athletic Trainer of the Year for 2001. He has also been recognized from the Southeastern Athletic Trainers Association as the Clinic /Corporate Award recipient in April 2005.

    In August 2002, he and the Sevier County Sports Medicine Program were profiled in the National Athletic Trainers Association News magazine. In November 2005, the program was highlighted in the NATA News in the "tips from the field" section on the design of the portable hydration carts.

    Scott is also a National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Approved Clinical Instructor as well as a NATA Board of Certification approved examiner.

    Scott enjoys playing golf, camping, hiking and spending time with his wife Carla and son Colton.


    Rissa Andres, ATC/L

    Rissa Andres, ATC/LRissa Andres, ATC/L, graduated from high school in Pingree, North Dakota. In 1987, she was offered a scholarship to play Division II basketball at Rollins College, in Winter Park, Florida. After obtaining a bachelor's degree in English, Rissa became interested in athletic training. She enrolled at the University of Florida in 1994 to pursue a career in sports medicine. While in Gainesville, Rissa covered high school football and served as the athletic trainer for women's sports at Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida.

    She later returned to Rollins College, where she served as assistant athletic trainer and traveled with both the men's and women's soccer, basketball, baseball and softball teams. She also assisted with the other 19 intercollegiate sports. During this time, Rissa was certified as an athletic trainer and licensed in 1996. While working at Rollins, she spent her mornings volunteering with Health South. It was here that she met the head athletic trainer for the Orlando Predators (Arena Football), who asked Rissa to assist with the team for two seasons.

    Rissa was then hired by Florida Hospital and served as Sports Medicine Outreach Coordinator. There, she was responsible for athletic training coverage and sports medicine education for three high schools, one community college, Disney, and other outreach events such as the Gridiron Classic, Hoop It Up, NHL Breakout, Gus Macker Basketball Tournament, AAU Jr. Nationals, WNBA Veteran's Camp, and the Orlando Magic Basketball Camps. She was also the medical supply coordinator for the Disney Marathon for three years.

    Rissa moved to Sevierville, in August 2001 to work for the Fort Sanders Sevier/LeConte Medical Center Sports Medicine team and serve as the head athletic trainer at Sevier County High School. She thoroughly enjoys her new position and is anxious to begin a student athletic training program at Sevier County High School to educate students who are interested in pursuing careers in athletic training.


    Josh Gallimore, ATC/L

    Josh Gallimore, ATC/LJosh Gallimore, ATC/L is a 1995 graduate from William Blount High School in Maryville and a 2000 graduate from Carson-Newman College, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in athletic training. While at Carson, Newman, he was nominated Male Student Athletic Trainer in 1999-2000.

    Josh received his certification as an athletic trainer in August 2000. He worked at Appalachian Therapy Center for a year before coming to work for the Fort Sanders Therapy Center in August 2001.

    Joshua is the athletic trainer at Seymour High School, in addition to working at both our Seymour and Sevierville therapy clinics.



    Jay Smith

    Jay Smith grew up in Jefferson County where he was a student athletic trainer at Jefferson County High School for four years. He then went to Murfreesboro Tn to attend Middle Tennessee State University at which he continued student athletic training, graduating with a B.S. in Athletic Training.

    He is now employed with Covenant Health through LeConte Medical Center working out of Pigeon Forge High School as their Athletic Trainer, managing their sports medicine needs and providing coverage to all school sports. Jay’s parents, Jim and Ann Smith have both been educators in the Jefferson County school system for the past several years with his Dad serving as a coach for 20 years with various sports including football and track.
